What is volumetric flow rate in 3D printing?
Volumetric flow rate measures the volume of molten plastic (in cubic millimeters) that a hotend can liquefy and extrude each second (mm³/s). The formula is: Flow Rate (mm³/s) = Layer Height (mm) × Line Width (mm) × Print Speed (mm/s).
How do I calculate maximum print speed from hotend flow rate?
Divide your hotend's maximum flow rate (mm³/s) by the cross-sectional bead area: Max Speed (mm/s) = Max Flow Rate ÷ (Layer Height × Line Width). For example, with a 24 mm³/s hotend, 0.2mm layer height, and 0.45mm line width: 24 ÷ (0.2 × 0.45) = 266.6 mm/s.
What causes extruder clicking and skipping during fast infill?
Extruder gear clicking occurs when the commanded print speed requires more volumetric flow than the hotend's thermal capacity can deliver. Viscous resistance builds up inside the melt zone, generating backpressure that overpowers the extruder stepper motor.
What are typical volumetric flow limits for common hotends?
Standard hotends (E3D V6, stock Creality) typically max out at 12–15 mm³/s. Bambu Lab stock hotends achieve 20–24 mm³/s (30–35 mm³/s with aftermarket CHT high-flow nozzles). E3D Volcano and Phaetus Rapido achieve 28–35 mm³/s, while specialized SuperVolcano hotends reach 60+ mm³/s.
