Filament & Spool Tare FAQs

How do I calculate how much filament is left on an open spool?

Weigh your spool on a digital kitchen or postal scale in grams (Gross Weight). Subtract the empty spool tare weight (typically 130g–240g depending on whether it is cardboard or plastic). Enter the net weight into MakersMetric to determine remaining meters and ensure your next print will not run out mid-job.

Why does filament length vary between materials of the same 1kg weight?

Filament length is inversely proportional to polymer density (g/cm³). For example, low-density Polypropylene (0.90 g/cm³) provides ~460 meters per 1kg spool (1.75mm), standard PLA (1.24 g/cm³) yields ~330 meters, and heavy carbon-fiber composites or filled plastics yield fewer meters per kilogram.

What is the standard diameter for 3D printer filament?

1.75mm is the universal industry standard used by modern desktop 3D printers, including Bambu Lab, Creality, Prusa, Voron, and Elegoo. 2.85mm (often called 3mm) is utilized predominantly by UltiMaker and specialized industrial extrusion systems.

How do I convert sliced resin print volume (mL) to weight in grams?

Multiply the volume in milliliters reported by your slicer (Lychee or Chitubox) by the resin's physical density (typically 1.05 to 1.15 g/cm³). A 100 mL print of standard resin requires approximately 110 to 115 grams of liquid polymer.
