Cost Calculation Methodology

Material Cost: (Grams Used / Spool Weight) × Spool Price. When entering linear usage (meters), mass is computed from filament diameter (1.75mm vs 2.85mm) and material density: Mass = π × r² × Length × Density.

Electricity Cost: (Watts / 1000) × Hours × kWh Rate

Depreciation Cost: (Hardware Retail Cost / Rated Lifespan Hours) × Print Hours

Labor Cost: (Labor Minutes / 60) × Hourly Rate

Risk Adjusted: Subtotal × (1 + Failure Rate %)

Cost Calculator FAQs

How do you calculate the true cost of a 3D print?

True 3D printing production cost combines four pillars: material usage (grams consumed × cost per gram), electricity (average hotend/bed wattage × hours × kWh utility rate), machine depreciation (hardware retail cost ÷ rated lifespan hours × print hours), and operator labor (slicing, bed prep, and post-processing). A risk multiplier (typically 5%–10%) is added to buffer against failures.

How much electricity does a 3D printer consume?

Most desktop FDM 3D printers consume between 100W and 350W on average. The heated bed accounts for the majority of power consumption during initial heat-up, while average steady-state printing draws 120W–200W. At $0.16/kWh, running an average printer costs approximately $0.02 to $0.04 per hour.

How much should I charge for 3D printing services?

Professional 3D printing services typically calculate total manufacturing cost (material + power + depreciation + labor) and apply a 40% to 65% retail profit margin (or a 2.5x to 3x multiplier). Fast turnaround, engineering resins, or carbon fiber composite filaments generally command premium pricing.

How do you calculate 3D printer depreciation?

Depreciation allocates the replacement cost of equipment across its working life. For example, a $600 printer with an expected operational lifespan of 3,000 printing hours incurs a depreciation rate of $0.20 per operating hour.
